HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO A BEETLE DRIVE ?....

Are you ready for a night of breathless excitement and laughter ?...

Lytham Belles May meeting 6th May 2012
7.30pm, Victory Hall, Lytham

 Cath Powell Community Development Manager of ParkView 4U will be our speaker at the meeting.

This will be followed by a Beetle Drive, how retro can we get !

The Beetle game was massive in the 60's,with Beetle drives in venues all about the country, so it won't be surprising that many of us won't have been to a Beetle drive or even heard of one before.

My Father once told me a story of a group of pensioners who stayed in our Blackpool guest House in 1963, going to what they thought was a  'Beetle Drive' at the ABC theatre (now The Syndicate) only to be faced by hoards of screaming girls going to see 'The Beatles' !

I thought it might be a good idea to give the basic rules of Beetle :

We will be playing in PAIRS as this is apparently quicker thus enabling us to fit in the full 12 games which make up a 'Beetle Drive'

We will sit at a table of 4, the players sitting opposite will make up a pair. The tables will be numbered.

One player in the pair throws the dice, BOTH players draw the body parts on their beetle card; e.g.one player throws a 6 and BOTH players draw a body on their cards.
In the version we will use,

* 6 lets you draw the body
* 5 - the head (which you must have before being allowed to draw the eyes or feelers),
* 4 - the tail
* 3 - one leg
* 2 - one feeler
* 1 - an eye.

BOTH players score for all the body parts they have drawn. In our version the highest score for a fully drawn beetle is 39 points. E.g. if you only got a body (6), head (5), one eye (1) and four legs (12) your score would be 24 - does that make sense ?

The first pair to complete a beetle and shout 'BEETLE' are the winners of that game.

At the end of the game, the winning pair (the ones with highest score) from each table of 4 players move up on to the next table and the losing pair move down a table and pair up with the other players at that table - they do not stay as a pair but form a new pair.

THE OVERALL WINNER IS STILL AN INDIVIDUAL PLAYER - WITH THE HIGHEST POINTS FROM ALL 12 GAMES.

OK - so it might not sound like a night that could cause breathless joy and laughter, but I am sure it will be great fun and a fab way to get to know your fellow 'Belles'........

BUNTING FOR PARK VIEW.......

I was shamed today !. A lady emailed me this morning to say how she had been following Lytham Belles with interest in the press and also through this blog, but, the blog had not been kept up to date !

She was of course right, and so with my hand slapped, here I am trying to rectify my lack of blogging...

Talking of press, we are in the currant (May) issue of Lancashire Life:

Our last meeting (April) saw us all making bunting pennants for Park View cafe and community centre, we had been asked to work to the themes of red, white and blue, The Jubilee, The Olympics or Lytham....

I think that the pennants look fantastic and surprisingly all very different....

The finished bunting will be presented to Cath Powell Park Views Community Development Manager who will the speaker at our next meeting on  Sunday 6th May 2012...

Don't forget to look out for the bunting when the new community centre and cafe opens......
